Screen Rant ’s Paul Young ReviewsThe Sorcerer ’s Apprentice
It ’s really not that big of a surprisal to me that I walk out ofThe Sorcerer ’s Apprenticescreening completely entertained after enjoying every min of the motion-picture show . To date , I have enjoy everything that Jerry Bruckheimer , Jon Turteltaub , and Nicholas Cage work on together for Disney , which consists of bothNational Treasurefilms .
In fact , if you enjoyed both of those previous moving picture then there is no rationality why you should n’t also savour this one . The convention for storytelling has remain fairly much the same and just like it did before , it works magic ( see what I did there ? ) .
The movie opens some clock time in the Medieval Age , in the castle of the legendary Arthurian champion Merlin . With an overly heavily - handed and thread out voiceover , we are tell that Merlin has three apprentice : Balthazar ( Nicolas Cage ) , Horvath ( Alfred Molina ) and Veronica ( Monica Bellucci ) , who are hear to protect Merlin and his dangerous spell - generically title " The Rising " - from pass into the hands of the malign sorceress Morgana ( Alice Krige ) .
As we already know from the preview , Horvath turn against his ripened captain and helps Morgana steal the while and obliterate Merlin . In the process of seek to press off and charm Morgana , Veronica performs a “ Soul Merging ” spell to snare them together in one body . In the appendage , Veronica ’s soul becomes entangled with Morgana ’s and Balthazar has to entrap them both in a nest chick to protect the world from Morgana ever using The Rising spell .
Balthazar then sets off on a centuries - farseeing quest to hunt down dangerous Morganian sorcerers all over the mankind , trapping each in the subsequently larger levels of the nesting doll . At the same clock time he is also bet for the " Prime Merlinian , " who Merlin state is the only person who will be capable to defeat Morgana and her magic , should she ever riposte .
After century of hopeful meetings with children who are potential competition do n’t pan out , Balthazar at long last foregather 10 year old Dave Stutler ( Jake Cherry and later Jay Baruchel ) by sodding chance ( or is it ? ) , right away recognizes his natural power for sorcery and offer him an apprenticeship . unluckily , Dave is a bit of a klutz and put Horvath detached ; the evil sorcerer picks up justly where he left off in a major battle with Balthazar , while endeavor to free Morgana . After another 10 - year - long caparison ( and some rather impressive CGI ) both sorcerer are freed once again and the hunting for the nuzzle doll trap start again .
I do n’t want to give away the whole motion picture because it was a lot of playfulness to watch , but just like any fellowship friendly Disney film , the good Guy win in the end .
There were several things I liked about this film : the visual impression were crazy - good , and while the story was predictable ( but enjoyable ) , the acting was above equation . Yes , it ’s reliable : Nicolas Cage could be starting some sort of dependable acting Ernst Boris Chain with his public presentation inKick AssandThe Sorcerer ’s Apprentice . He ’s a bit zany but driven in his cause to find his apprentice and he pull in off the sometimes subtle humour very well . There is nothing bad to say about Alfred Molina ’s performance because he ’s just as ripe here as he was in his previous roles - like his function as Doc Ock inSpider - Man 2 , Molina has the power to play a very dependable bad guy with enough profoundness to keep the quality from becoming one - dimensional , while at the same meter not go so rich that he overshadows the rest of the picture show .
Monica Bellucci is given picayune to no note but she for certain look reasonably on screen - and Alice Krige toy Morgana as the over - the - top , “ bent on demolish the populace as we have intercourse it , ” evil sorceress that one might expect .
While I liked Jay Baruchel ’s performance , it did n’t really light upon me as a in high spirits note in his career - and I think it ’s because he is starting to spiel every part with the same affectation . Robert De Niro , John Malkovich and Al Pacino all have the same problem ( if you’re able to call it that ) . Whenever you see them on projection screen playing a character , it ’s De Niro , Malkovich and Pacino playing a reference and not a character on screen being played by them .
Baruchel is quickly developing that same problem , except all of his characters so far have been sort of mousy , hesitating and borderline vexation .
The standout performance for me was Toby Kebbel ( Rocknrolla ) as Drake Stone , Horvath ’s apprentice . His young , flamboyant , cocksure magician was a mixture of Liberace , David Blaine and a mega - rock star all tossed together to create this über - prestidigitator full of wit . He was a joy to view .
I think Disney really passed up an opportunity to destroyThe Last Airbenderin theaters over the July 4thweekend , because honestly , sept did n’t have much to select from in the way of respectable family - friendly action films and this moving picture would have been a much - comprehended option .
Bottom line : The Sorcerer ’s Apprenticeshould be right up your alley if you are in the mood for an enjoyable natural process / escapade motion picture that is n’t repair .
