EWspoke withThe Last Jediwriter and director Rian Johnson , who offered some data on   the summons of creating   Snoke . WhileThe Force Awakensonly featured a massive holograph of the First Order originator , this year ’s film will put   audiences face to face with the Supreme Leader . By rather than use prosthetics   of any other virtual effect to bring the fictitious character to life , Snoke will be purely   CGI . Per Johnson :

“ No , it ’s entirely a mo - roof functioning .   [ puppet designer ] Neal Scanlan build a maquette that we had on stage set for lighting reference and to give the actors a sense of what it was going to feel like . And then we scanned that and [ Industrial Light & Magic ] used that in their rendering , but Snoke will be an entirely CG creation . ”

This mirror something that   Serkis antecedently distinguish - namely , that hedidn’t wear prosthetics to work Snoke . Of of course , Missouri - cap is n’t " purely data processor generated " acting . An thespian still needs to do considerable work to add nuance and shading and Serkis ' past workplace as Smeagol / Gollum , King Kong , and Caesar will avail work   a good sense of deepness to Snoke that few other actor could provide . Johnson , for one , ca n’t wait for audiences to see the new villain in action :

“ I ’d be sitting at the monitor lizard just with my eyes as big as dinner plate It ’s one of those performance where after every melodic phrase , I ’d look over at whoever ’s standing next to me with an expression on my face like , ‘ Oh , my God , we just got that . ”

Along with word on Snoke , we ’ve also see more   about the other villain ofThe Last Jedi : Kylo Ren . Part of Luke ’s journeying in the new plastic film will be grappling withonce thinking Kylo was the Chosen Oneof Jedi lore . belike , that will play intoLuke and Rey ’s dynamicas they train inThe Last Jedi .
