Sweet Magnoliasseason 4 included a numeral of thrilling update for thecharacters ofSweet Magnolias , one of the best being Cal and Maddie ’s hymeneals , but one miss scene in particular would have made it so much better . Of all the time of year of the show thus far , season 4 isthe best season ofSweet Magnolias , in part because it was so full of shocking plot twist and major moments . Among those twists wereMaddie ’s decision to leave Serenityand move to New York for a publication job and the tragic news that Bill had died .
The time of year wasted no meter in revealing that it would be full of surprises . In the very first episode , Maddie and Cal surprised the guest of their Halloween company with the revelation that it was actually their wedding . Although this was a sport and exciting winding for the first instalment of the new season , the absence of one central picture detract from the moment .

Although it was fair clear that the couple was heading in this direction , it was nevertheless surprising thatMaddie and Cal ’s engagement happened totally off screen . There was a one - class leap betweentheSweet Magnoliasseason 3 endingand the beginning of season 4 , during which Maddie and Cal evidently got pursue . It ’s unexpended that such a major bit ( that audiences had long been waiting to see ) would n’t be read on blind , and the absence of the meshing — or at least the marriage offer — regrettably made the wedding a scrap less exciting .

PerDeadline , Sweet Magnoliasshowrunner Sheryl J. Anderson wanted audience , like the Serenity townspeople , to be surprisedwhen Maddie and Cal revealed that their political party was really their nuptials and did n’t cerebrate that choice deprived viewers of anything . Anderson explained :
" We did n’t feel that we were taking anything away from the viewers because they were middling much toeing the start production line , they were almost operate at the end of time of year 3 , and so we did n’t palpate like we were drive anything away by acknowledging , yes they got engaged . And we want to surprise our viewers , just like we surprise everybody else in Serenity by bear them get marry . "
Although the system of logic makes sense , especially paired with the time leap that allowed so much to happen in season 4 , some witness may very well experience as though they miss out on something by have this jumping forward .
