Let ’s face it , as funny as Gary Larson ’s masterpiece , The Far Side , is , it ’s get a few gags that can easily go over someone ’s foreland . Larson ’s strip infamously reveled in the tune between the surreal and the minutia of everyday living and that magic touch of his created XII , if not hundreds , of funny gags .

But some gags are just downright confusing . Whether it ’s kine dissemble like citizenry or people acting like child , someFar Sidestripsare just plain hard to explain , at least to some . Read on to see just howconfusing someFar Sidestripsreally are .

10If Pets Wore Hats

Publication Date: December 12th, 1981

If there ’s one thingThe Far Sidedoes well , it ’s anthropomorphize animalsfor a pipit . While this gag does n’t have mankind ’s furry friend holding down jobs or verbalise about liveliness , it does humanize them in one fussy way . This funnies fix a sketch where pets wear hat . The dog wear baseball roof , the computerized tomography wear felt hat and a razzing inside a house hold out a sombrero path too expectant for its cage .

And that ’s it . Is the caper that the animals would all just fag hat that muse them ? Dogs get baseball caps for their rough - and - tumble lifestyle , while the more serious felines get more serious trilby ? Then why does a bird get a sombrero ? Oris thisFar Sidegag a commentary on pointless and uneconomical discipline ? As silly as the scenario is , it ’s hard to get the intended joke .

9Bewitched

Publication Date: August 19th, 1982

Despite the timeless nature ofmostFar Sidestrips , even Larson could n’t help occasionally using pop culture to avail him craft a gag . In this particular tip of the cap to Hollywood , it showcases a author ’ way for the showBewitched , and one author is sky-high describing a plot for an episode(a formulaic one at that ) while one of the writers internally notes that she likes the idea for the episode .

This strip show does require one to know about the common curing - up of aBewitchedepisode , but is Larson pointing out that there ’s no real need for a piece of writing room for a situation comedy which generally does the same thing over and over ? Then what ’s the head of the one writer pronounce that she likes it?It ’s gotThe Far Side’sstyle , but its humour here is a act more subtle .

8Cheetah Wheelies

Publication Date: January 12th, 1985

The Far Sidecan ordinarily say a flock without saying much . In this striptease , Larson takes readers to a plain where a couple of antelope are watch out a coalition of cheetahs . But instead of the chetah trying to pursue the antelope , they ’re all just having the meter of their life , running around and popping ‘ wheelies ’ . The thing is , none of them are depend on motorcycles , so their wheelies are just them lead around on their hind legs with their front ones in the air .

Sure , The Far Sideis meant to be absurdand the idea of chetah drop the ball off while doing mock wheelies is one that can make a hardened person crack a grinning . But is it just the absurdity here or is there a deep paronomasia or jest about chetah pretend to bug out wheelies like cyclists ?

7Mr. Sun

Publication Date: June 25th, 1983

One of the funnier aspects ofThe Far Sideis assure scientist or other academic professionals behavein style that people would n’t imagine they ’d act like . For this landing strip , Larson has two astronauts deeply in space and in deep difficulty . Their capsule is far off - trend and one of the spaceman highlight the gravity of their situation . Not only are their control jammed , but they are point straight for the sun or , as the astronaut refers to it as , ‘ Mr. Sun ’ .

Maybe this is a case of overthinking and the joke is that this is an incredibly life-threatening topic and the astronaut is look up to the imminent disaster in such a infantile way . But is there anything else here ordoes the wittiness of thisFar Sidegag hail from what should be a trained professional suddenly regressing in the grimace of peril ?

6How Flowers See Themselves

Publication Date: July 9th, 1984

It ’s clean from his legion strips that Gary Larson absolutely do it nature . ThisFar Sidestrip is divide into two sections , the first one take a look at a group of regular , average daisy and judge “ How we see flowers ” . justly below it is another control panel label “ How they see themselves ” and the five daisies now all have faces with long noses and freehanded tooth , making them look more like traditionalFar Sidecharacters .

This is definitely a harder one to understand . There ’s no real clever visual jape and the daisies , while they ’ve all get goofy appearances , are n’t that funny - looking for , at least , compare to any otherFar Sidecharacter . Maybe the jape has to do with position , but it ’s hard to tell what Larson was going for with this landing strip .

5Bad Haircut

Publication Date: January 29th, 1985

Again , The Far Siderevels in the absurd . But this laugh goes a spot further and posit a gaga and perplexing scenario . Here , a woman is talking with a barber , who explains what happened during her ( presumably ) married man ’s late haircut . manifestly , their conversation got political and during the trimness , the barber took a trivial too much off the top until Roy ’s point was nothing more than a bantam mass on top of his shoulders .

The trick is probably just Larson taking a humorous scenario and take it to the extremum . But is that really it ? Was this a large commentary on how political treatment can negatively affect exercise relationships ? Or wasThe Far Sidejust using this to prompt readers to not piss off their barber while in the professorship ?

4The Other Side

Publication Date: June 12th, 1981

SometimesThe Far Sideisn’t about attempt to make readers express joy , but rather , think . So with this slip , Larson pull out one of the oldest gag in the book , asking why the chicken crossed the road . But , in trueFar Sidestyle , it give it a unique twist . Here , the chicken is on one side of the road , while the other has a billboard advertising ‘ The Other Side ’ , which has the beguiling slogan “ Do you need a reason ? ” .

Does the liquid body substance of this Far Side strip come up from the poulet as he gape at a signthat tempts him so ? Or is Larson using this striptease in a more meta sense , ask the proofreader if they really require a understanding to know why the chicken crossed the road ?

3The Big Horse

Publication Date: July 12th, 1985

SomeFar Sidestrips are just so godforsaken and out - there , readers have no choice but to go along with the logicin them . This strip is set up in the Wild West day and a bank robber has just get away with cash . The sheriff does n’t seem too apprehensive about the robbery , nor that the thief is perplex away , and he channelize out to his deputies that they can take “ the big horse cavalry ” .

And yes , he intend that literally , as the sheriff ’s department has a buck three times as big as an mean - sized equid . The idea of a ' bighearted sawhorse ' is comical , sure , but why exactly is it needed now , especially when the robber is just getting away? The Far Sidehas a lot of interesting ideas , but sometimes it ’s too abstract for its own commodity .

2Late Squid

Publication Date: June 21st, 1985

The Far Sidepresents a world where the mundane fulfill the surreal , and nothing say that near than this offbeat airstrip . A ship is under attack by a gargantuan squid , and its rider are swimming for their lives . However , the calamary break in their fire , noting that it ’s already 6:30 and that they ’re in problem .

Who exactly is the calamary in trouble with ? And why the arbitrary time , like 6:30 ? Are they late for an appointment or another attack or is some unseen authority requesting their comportment ? Perhaps there ’s nothing deeper to this strip , and it ’s just a delicious mix of real animation and surrealism . Butif there ’s a deep meaning to thisFar Sidestrip , it ’s kind of hard to come up .

1Cow Tools

Publication Date: October 28th, 1982

What other jocularity inThe Far Side’sentire history has call forth up more debate among fans than this implausibly notorious gag ? The idea is unbelievably simple . It demonstrate a farm wherea cow , aFar Sidestaple , has meet a aggregation of barbarous imitation of toolslike proverb and hammer . The cow stares on blankly and the caption but reads ‘ Cow Tools ’ , leaving it up to the viewer to determine the trick .

Is it because these prick are what cattle are open of do , given their limitations ? Or are these the tools cows would use inThe Far Side’sworld ? Many readers have been stumped over the true meaning ofwhat Larson was going for with this Far Side strip and hazard are , people will be deliberate it for years to come in .
