Dark Winds
While he ’s been a supporting character in all three seasons , Sheriff Gordo Sena has quietly been the best character inDark Windsseason 3 , and I ’m hope he bring back for season 4 , though the chances do n’t take care proficient . This season has had the most sprawling event yet , withDark Windsseason 3 finally connecting Joe and Chee ’s case with Bernadette ’s case . This season has also bring out somenew characters toDark Winds , and they ’ve each had a big impact on the plot .
But it ’s the characters who have been in previous seasons of the show who are still the most pivotal , and it ’s been great to seeDark Windsseason 3bring Sheriff Gordo Sena more fully into the story . As Gordo , A Martinez did an excellent job of bringing biography to the taciturn sheriff last time of year , turn over depth to the story and becoming a everlasting foil for Joe Leaphorn . Though his narrative should have wrapped with theending ofDark Windsseason 2 , Gordo was a surprising addition to Dark Winds season 3 and it ’s made the show comfortably .
Sheriff Gordo Has Been The Best Character In Dark Winds Season 3
He’s A Levelheaded, Ride-Or-Die Friend
So far , Sheriff Gordo has been the MVP of the season . While he was a front in season 2 and grew closer to Joe through the season , he still did n’t get much growing . InDark Windsseason 3 , however , he ’s beget more CRT screen time and read just how great a reference he ’s become . He ’s been the voice of rationality for Joe , seeing that his colleague and admirer has been tardily gyrate since Agent Sylvia Washington came to the reservation to inquire B.J. Vines ' murder . He ’s been the cooler nous all along , covertly but pointedly remind Joe to act it coolheaded .
In many way in Dark Winds season 3 , Suzanne represent everything B.J. Vines is not to Joe , and the decisiveness he makes to aid her shows it .
But he ’s also proven to be a ride - or - die friend , the kind who has - quite literally , as it turns out - helped Joe entomb a body . It was n’t always vindicated just how much Gordo knew aboutwhat Joe did to B.J. Vines at the close ofDark Windsseason 2 , but the conversation they had in last season ’s finale powerfully suggest that he knew Joe had something to do with Vines ' disappearance after the criminal made bail . This time of year confirms that Gordo knows Joe abduct and leave Vines in the desert to die out , and he does n’t gauge him for it . He may not have been in on Joe ’s kidnapping plot , but he certainly has n’t turned his friend in , and , in fact , he ’s done everything he can to keep Joe from incriminating himself .
Gordo Has Been Planning To Retire Since The End Of Dark Winds Season 2
He Doesn’t Have It In Him To Be A Cop Anymore
Unfortunately , despite Gordo beingDark Windsseason 3 ’s breakout character , the chances of him return for season 4 are uncertain . During the same conversation where it was mean that he knew what Joe had done , he also told Joe that he was strike out . The first episode of season 3 confirmed that retirement is still in the program . Joe see Gordo at the crime scene and joke , " So when you United Nations - retire , they make you give that watch back ? " to which Gordo respond , " No , they lie with I ’m just short - timing it till they bring in the unexampled guy . "
This time of year ’s plot line may push Gordo to settle his retirement earlier .
However , this time of year ’s plot line may push Gordo to settle his retreat sooner . Joe ’s conclusion with B.J. Vines , and now the fact he ca n’t keep it together , is threatening not just his exemption , but also that of Gordo and Emma . Even though Gordo has never instantaneously articulate he knows what Joe did - as a bull , he knows about plausible deniability , after all - it ’s clear he does , and if Agent Washington widens the compass of her direction , she could very well take Gordo down , too . Even if he does n’t get dishevel up in Joe ’s sight , legally or reprehensively , the stress may just reaffirm his conclusion to retire and put law enforcement completely behind him .

Gordo Sena Is A Very Minor Character In The Tony Hillerman Books, But The Show Has Expanded His Role
It Also Gave Joe Gordo’s Backstory From The Books
It ’s a testament to just how neat A Martinez has been in the part of Sheriff Gordo that his role has been hugely expand from what it was in the Holy Scripture and even from the arc he had in the first season of the show . In Tony Hillerman ’s series , Gordo has only appeared in 1980’sPeople of Darkness , the fourth book in Hillerman ’s Joe Leaphorn / Jim Chee serial publication and the book that season 2 adapt . In that novel , Lawrence " Gordo " Sena is the sheriff of Valencia County in New Mexico and has been in law enforcement for decades , interchangeable to the television show , but that ’s about where the similarities end .
In theDark WindsTV adjustment , Gordo is the sheriff of the fictional Scarborough County , Arizona , not Valencia County , New Mexico .
Interestingly , Sheriff Sena ’s story inPeople of Darknessis the one that was loosely adapt and then give to Joe Leaphorn as his backstory . In that book , the tragical accident that happens is an oil theater of operations plosion , not a minelaying detonation , and it ’s Sena ’s brother who is killed , not Joe Leaphorn ’s Word . It ’s still B.J. Vines behind it all , and for largely the same reasons as in the show , but it ’s interesting that Gordo ’s backstory has become Joe ’s in the show . It ’s potential that the writer never expected A Martinez to be so well in the office , which is just why he needs to get along back for season 4 .
Dark Winds is a 2022 television series based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels. Set in 1970s Navajo Nation, it follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Officer Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) as they investigate a double murder case. The show delves into both mysticism and the stark realities of life on a Native American reservation, balancing crime-solving with rich cultural narratives and character development.
Sheriff Gordo Can & Should Return In Dark Winds Season 4
Even If It’s In A Consultant Role
Despite it being unlikely , there ’s still , of course , a chance for Sheriff Gordo to return inDark Windsseason 4 . The writers can do what they want , and if there is n’t a place for A Martinez in next season ’s cast , they should make one . Even if Gordo does formally retire once the new guy cable take over , he could maltreat into a consult role on one of Joe ’s cases . Or , as we ’ve see , he could even simply become Joe ’s now - civilian friend and confidante . If there ’s a way to keep him around in the chronicle , they should , as he adds a alone dynamic to the show that Joe does n’t have with any other character , and it would be a real disgrace if that were to go away . Dark Windswould be a duller show without it .
