A major disappointment that relies more on jump scares than genuine scares. The script is sub-par, and Renny Harlin’s direction is even worse. Don’t waste your time or money on this crapfest.
When a movie studio apartment does n’t show a peculiar movie to critics ahead of time , that ’s unremarkably not a good sign . Sadly , such was the example withExorcist : The rootage . Given that fact , plus the fact that Renny Harlin was directing , I went into this moving picture with moderately down expectations . Incredibly , this movie did not even meet those .
This movie is a prequel to the pilot . The story is plant in 1949 , several year after World War II has ended . Father Merrin ( play by Stellan Skarsgård ) , who would later be called upon to exorcise the demon from Regan MacNeil , is a troubled soul . The job is , Father Merrin saw the Nazis do thing during World War II that make him to question his faith . Before you could say " Jack Daniel ’s , " he has resigned from the priesthood and become a heavily - imbibition , tough - talking archaeologist . In a aspect that looks blatantly rip off from anIndiana Jonesmovie , a collector terminate up take him to work on with an archeological team that has find an old church in Africa .
Movie cliché # 720 :
Person # 1 : " You ’re assuming I ’ll say yes . "
Person # 2 : " You already have . "
What is puzzling everybody is the fact that the church looks like in pristine term , like it was buried straightaway after it was build . The other big query is how a Christian church could be work up 100 before Christianity was officially found as a religion . The African tribe in the nearby village defy to go into the church because they are afraid of its vicious spirits . When Father Merrin and his team go inside the church , they witness some thing that seem rather out of place in a house of worship , to say the least .
Pop quiz : The African kindred has already had a few bizarre thing happen . After Father Merrin and his squad go inside the Christian church , what happens to the frequency of outlandish event ?
A ) increment
B ) step-down
carbon ) Stops completely
D ) Lags behind the NASDAQ
I ’ll give you a hint : It ’s the obvious answer . The kin group really originate freaking out when even more forged events come out to happen them . Eventually , the British Army becomes involved , and Father Merrin finds himself near relive the events from World War II that he had go for to forget . There was one telephone line uttered by Father Merrin that got a slim chuckle from me : " In my experience , start out soldier regard in any state of affairs is always a bad thought . " There are so many questions at this point . Will Father Merrin witnesser outcome that cause him to renew his faith ? Will Father Merrin end up exorcize a daimon at some point ? Will Father Merrin react with shock to a " plot spin " we all count on out 20 minute before he did ?
I must admit , I kind of like the ideas behind the story , but thanks to Harlin ’s tactless charge , it falls completely flat . The elusive creepiness of the archetype has been replaced with gory shock value in this one . He sample to throw in all kinds of game twists and surprises , but almost all of them are " red herring " that anyone with a pulse can blob a mile aside . With the exception of a few " jump scares , " this picture show is not frightening in the least . Well , in reality , allow me correct myself . The only matter that frighten me about this movie was how second-rate it was . Even the melodious score by Trevor Rabin was smooth , which is not full when you ’re doing a horror movie . As much as I hate to say this , I think the criminally overratedBlair Witch Projectwas scarier than this crapfest . ( And no , that ’s not a compliment to either flick . ) The one - two clout of a bad script and tough direction makes every fit so predictable that you may almost write each scene in your thinker before it bechance .
pop music quiz : A mankind is crawling down a cave when his lamp goes out . After he gets the flaming going in the lamp again and holds it out in front of him , what will be six inch from his face ?
A ) A demonically possess somebody
B ) The holy grail ( but he must choose wisely )
century ) A magical rod that attract red dragon
D ) A briefcase belong to Marsellus Wallace
Now if you do n’t know the answer to that one , you need to get out to the moving picture theatre more often . If you have followed all the motion picture in this serial , you know that as long as you stay aside from Maryland and Africa , you should be fine .
Overall , this movie was a tremendous disappointment . I was n’t expect it to be capital , but when it ’s this unfit , you have to marvel why Morgan Creek even inconvenience making it in the first place . The actor all do admirable jobs , but with a lousy playscript and inept guidance , even they ca n’t overstretch this flick out of the gutter . The original still rest my favorite ; no other motion picture in this series can equal it . I have take reports that William Peter Blatty , who wrote the first and third films in this series and organise the third , was pleased with Paul Schrader ’s version of the fourth moving picture . However , Morgan Creek chose to put off that edition and wholly reshoot the film with Renny Harlin at the helm . The good news is that since Schrader ’s version is totally freestanding , there ’s a near chance we may terminate up see it on DVD fairly before long . Let ’s hope … In the interim , do n’t waste your meter and money on the Renny Harlin version of this crapfest , unless you ’re a die - hard fan ( no pun think ) .
