This clause contains freebooter for Dark Winds season 3 , episode 4.Joe Leaphorn ’s ( Zahn McClarnon ) decision to kill BJ Vines ( John Diehl ) has been tearing him apart inDark Windsseason 3 , but not for the reason I thought it was . Ever since theending ofDark Windsseason 2 , when Leaphorn leave Vines to die in the desert , he ’s been stalk both figuratively and literally . Leaphorn has been stalked by the Ye’iitsoh , which is either a manifestation of his guilt or a piece of actual bad music . We get it on that Leaphorn had n’t been handling his role in Vines ' death well , butDark Windsthrew a curveball on why on the button he was so torn up about it .

So far , it has seemed like Joe was riddled with guilt for a heady decision he made with BJ Vines . It was sluttish to assume that Joe , a human who has dedicate almost his intact animation to serving and bear on police and order on the Navajo Nation , would have felt risky that he did n’t go through the legal duct and rather swear on vigilante " Indian " judge . By theending ofDark Windsseason 3 , episode 4 , however , it does n’t seem like Leaphorn has even considered that part of his guilt : he seems to be mad that he did n’t kill Vines himself .

AfterDark Windsseason 3 , instalment 4 , it does n’t seem like Leaphorn is actually feeling guilty about vote out Vines . While he was recounting the tale to Emma , Joe seemed a circle more torn up about not being " strong enough " to pull the trigger and shoot down Vines himself . He mention that he let the land do what he could n’t , and through it all , he keep that he had to protect the Diné and get retribution for Joe Jr. His Holy Scripture did n’t indicate that he had any remorse at all for Vines ' death , which is fairly shocking for Leaphorn .

Joe’s Conversation With Emma Potentially Reveals A Darkness In Him We Hadn’t Seen Before

Joe Doesn’t Seem To Have Any Remorse For BJ Vines' Death; He’s More Cold-Blooded Than We Thought

There is a chance that Joe was just redact up a front to seem stronger and justify his actions , but if he really does think not kill Vines himself was the big part of his decision , that has some major implications for his fibre . We had been assuming that Leaphorn was reckon the ants and the Ye’iitsoh because he could n’t handle killing a man in inhuman blood , but his conversation with Emma completely recontextualizes his guilty conscience . Joe is no longer a man haunted by a fault made in the warmth of the bit , he ’s a cold - full-blood killer who regret not direct his retaliation all the fashion .

In many ways in Dark Winds season 3 , Suzanne present everything B.J. Vines is not to Joe , and the decision he give to help oneself her prove it .

That would be a massive change to Joe Leaphorn , both for the character in Tony Hillerman ’s book and forDark Windsitself . Joe has always been a paragon ofDark wind : his marriage to Emma was never anything but wholesome , he serve well his community well and proudly , and he was a mentor to the younger generations through Bernadette and Chee . It ’s surprising to think that such a good man could have the capability to not only murder a person but in reality regret not doing the deed with his own two hands . mayhap Joe is n’t as good as we opine .
